*According to 2000 Census Data Keithsburg Town SloganThe city of Keithsburg, Illinois was founded in 1837 by Robert Keith, who came here from Scotland in 1834.Oquawka(Oquawkiek) which is south of Keithsburg, approximately 12 miles, was named by the Sac and Fox Indians. The name means Yellowbanks, named due to the yellow sandy soil on the riverbanks and designating their territory. New Boston is located to the north and west of Keithsburg and is known as Upper Yellowbanks. The Yellowbanks Heritage Association was formed in 1983 to preserve the history of the area and to promote tourism and the economic development of the territory.
