Surveyed by Abraham Lincoln

The quiet, relaxing city of New Boston is a fantastic place to visit in the Summer for lots of water fun. Established in 1834, New Boston, Illinois proudly boasts of not only being surveyed by Abraham Lincoln, but also the very first town that Abe Lincoln surveyed. Mr. Lincoln mapped the town out in a wagon wheel shape, which fully explains the uniquely shaped lots and street directions of New Boston, Illinois.

The area was called Upper Yellow Banks by the local Indians. William Denison and his son, John, came here in 1827 and lived among the Indains in peace. New Boston was the first village in Mercer County. New Boston, Illinois was platted in September 1834 by a young man who later became President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.
